Executive Director’s Note…

With change comes opportunity…
The postponement of the APP Annual Conference in Nanaimo — typically a good time to catch up with colleagues, network and build new relationships, and market your goods and services — has meant looking for new and innovative ways to keep the Port Community connected around the Pacific Rim. Most successful organizations have already realized that to navigate through change, one must look outside traditional operations and consider new ways to do business. It is with this thought in mind that the APP continues to work hard on your behalf to find new ways to reach audiences.

In addition to Pacific Ports Magazine (details below), our new website is almost ready to launch, plus, we’re working with a number of organizations on some exciting initiatives.

First, mark you calendars for June 18, 2020 when the APP joins with like-minded trade associations to assist and promote a webinar series being developed by the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD). More details will follow soon so watch out.

On August 11, 2020, the APP will be hosting its Annual General Meeting and, for the first time in 107 years, will bring this to you virtually.

On October 8, 2020, the APP is very pleased to be partnering with Yardi Systems to bring you a technical workshop (virtual, of course) that will look at Port Real Estate Management and how to create efficiencies that will allow you to spend more time on operations elsewhere.

We’re also asking ports to participate in the IAPH’s Port Economic Impact Barometer — surveys like this provide an important source of information that can assist you in your own operations. This week’s survey is now online: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Covid19PortsJune1 – sorry for the short notice but answers for this week are due on Thursday, June 4…so don’t delay!

So, even though in-person meetings might not be happening this year, we’re making the best of it and developing new opportunities to help you keep your finger on the pulse of the industry. I hope you’ll take advantage of these to get the most out of your APP membership.

As always, I’m interested in hearing your thoughts. Call or email anytime.

Best regards,
Jane McIvor

Port of San Diego to replenish sand at Kellogg Beach
June 3, 2020 — As part of the Port of San Diego’s continued efforts to keep San Diego Bay a treasured destination, the Port will be replenishing sand at Kellogg Beach. The project is anticipated to begin on or shortly after Monday, June 8, and most of the work is anticipated to be completed by July.

Located along the southwestern shoreline of the Shelter Island Yacht Basin in the Point Loma area of northern San Diego Bay, approximately 2,000 cubic yards of natural sand will be added to the beach. Replenishing the sand will enhance the experience for visitors and help protect the coastline from high levels of natural erosion by maintaining or improving the current slope of the beach to the water.

U.S. Firm Tieban’s Suao Port Investment to Create Leading Global Manufacturer of Densified Bamboo Railway Ties
June 3, 2020 — The Port of Keelung, TIPC announced its decision on the public bid for the long-term lease of Warehouse 4 at Suao Port on October 24th, 2019. The bid was awarded to TieBam, Inc., which submitted the most-attractive investment proposal. The lease contract was signed at the end of February, and the lease period began this month (March). TieBam will build a new production facility on the site, which, once online, will generate an initial NT$1.6 billion in revenues annually.

TieBam, Inc., the Taiwan subsidiary of US-based TieBam, Inc., specializes in the densification and processing of bamboo into durable, environmentally sustainable railway ties. The rail market today still largely relies on traditional wood ties. Rising environmental awareness and tightening timber supplies are increasing challenges for the traditional wood tie sector.

Port of Long Beach: Business Recovery Task Force Manages Crisis, Looks to the Future
May 28, 2020 — Efficiency. Resiliency. Advocacy. These pillars have kept the Port of Long Beach strong in good times and bad. While the one-two punch of the U.S.-China trade war and a global pandemic has slowed trade around the world, it has toughened the Port of Long Beach’s resolve to build on these pillars and work with its partners to emerge stronger.

“We have remained open for business and we will continue to do so throughout this period of radical uncertainty,” said Executive Director Mario Cordero. “Early on, we created our Business Recovery Task Force to respond quickly to the current challenges facing our Port, our community and our nation, and lay the groundwork to maximize recovery for when cargo rebounds.”

Retherford Appointed to Port of Newport Commission
May 27, 2020 — Coinciding with the 110th anniversary of the Port of Newport’s first Port Commission meeting, four commissioners voted unanimously to appoint Kelley Retherford to fill a vacancy on the commission at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday.

Retherford was appointed to a term expiring on June 30, 2021, which was left vacant when Sara Skamser resigned from the body earlier in May. Retherford, the only applicant for the position, brings a wealth of experience with her as the Vice President of both Retherford Fisheries, Inc. and Reliance Fisheries, Inc. She has also served on other business and non-profit boards.

“I would like to serve for the purpose of maintaining and building the future of this port,” she wrote in her application for consideration. “I would like to know that the future is secure and the growth and beauty of this port is secure. As a businesswoman, wife, mother, and grandmother, I believe that preserving and protecting is an important aspect for the future. That in order to continue to enjoy the area in which we live in and around, we need to be part of the process.”

Port of Hueneme: Local Innovation Center Vaults to National Stage
May 2020 — Harnessing the power of partnership, Department of Navy’s workforce “super-connector” NavalX announced an expansion of its Tech Bridge initiative to Ventura County. Joining five other new Tech Bridge locations around the nation, the Ventura location will be housed at the Port of Hueneme.

“I applaud our Federal partners for joining with us and the innovative ecosystem taking shape here in Ventura County,” said Oxnard Harbor District Board President Jess Ramirez. “This new designation will bolster the abilities of our community to develop cutting-edge technology right here at the Port.”

Kristin Decas, CEO & Port Director added, “Expanding our partnership to include this federal initiative strengthens our collaborative approach to solving the most pressing challenges of the maritime industry, be it security, environmental, supply chain, or infrastructure-based solutions. Tech Bridge will be housed in the Port’s 319 warehouse which also houses FATHOMWERX and the Port’s MAST (Maritime Advanced Systems & Technology) Lab.

Work Continues on New Terminal at Port of Alaska
May 15, 2020 — There’s a lot of hammering at the Port of Alaska, as crews work on the dock that will house the new Petroleum and Cement Terminal.

“What we’re seeing behind us is the ability for to move petroleum and cement as we rebuild the state, as we build into the future,” said Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz.

The structure will replace Petroleum Oil Lubricants Terminal 1, which opened in 1965. It’s now severely corroded and suffered significant structural damage during the November 2018 earthquake, according to the muni.

“It is a sign too that Anchorage is a resilient place, that we are coming back from an earthquake, we’re moving through a pandemic,” Berkowitz said. “We’re going to make sure that this terminal is going to be here for a generation and another generation after that.”

30th PNWER Annual Summit to be Held in 2021
May 15, 2020 — The COVID-19 crisis has presented unparalleled challenges to communities across the Pacific Northwest region. As an organization representing states, provinces & territories, PNWER’s top priority is to foster safe and mutually-beneficial collaboration across our 10 jurisdictions in the U.S. and Canada.

After careful deliberation with our PNWER Officers, Executive Committee, Montana Host Committee, and legislative members, the 30th Annual Summit will now be held in Big Sky, Montana, August 15-19, 2021.

PNWER will instead be hosting a series of virtual sessions examining a sector-by-sector approach to safe recovery in each of our working group focus areas. These virtual sessions will be happening over the course of the next six months and will enable us to reach additional legislators who were not able to travel to the Summits in the past. We encourage you to follow PNWER on social media and on our website for updates and to share information with your colleagues about the virtual sessions.
