Port of Brookings Harbor welcomed as newest Port Member of the APP
Already regarded as one of the most popular destinations on the Oregon coast for recreational boating, fishing, and RVing (not to mention a substantial commercial fishing fleet), the Port of Brookings Harbor will be undergoing “port-altering” changes over the next few years that will see its popularity soar even higher. With a well-thought-out strategic plan, a FEMA project grant, and State and County partners, Port Manager Gary Dehlinger and his team, along with their five-member Port Commission have prioritized a number of projects that will not only improve current infrastructure but will position the Port for expansion well into the future. With a career as a project engineer in Southern California before taking on the role of Port Manager for the past five years, Dehlinger is well-suited to see the initiatives come to fruition.

NOFO – Grant opportunity: Infrastructure for Rebuilding America discretionary grant program
February 17, 2021 — The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) today announced it is seeking applicants for the FY 2021 round of the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) discretionary grant program to fund transportation projects of national and regional significance that are in line with the Biden Administration’s principles for national infrastructure projects that result in good-paying jobs, improve safety, apply transformative technology, and explicitly address climate change and racial equity. The funding available for this year’s grants totals approximately $889 million.

Midstream Lighting provides tool to calculate savings on upgrades to LED lighting
February 18, 2021 — Midstream Lighting has developed an online tool for estimating potential energy, financial and maintenance savings by upgrading to LED floodlighting. Midstream notes: “One of the major benefits of switching from conventional Metal Halide or Sodium lamps to LED lighting is the commercial value gained through lower energy usage and reduced maintenance costs. In many cases, energy costs can be reduced by as much as 75%.

Federal government appoints two directors to Board of Port of Nanaimo
February 17, 2020 — The Federal government has appointed two directors to the Board of the Port of Nanaimo filling two outstanding vacancies. Jeet Manhas has been appointed as the Federal representative and Shiva Dean has been appointed as the Federal representative for the International Trade Group of Users, each for a three year term.
As outlined in the Canada Marine Act, the Federal representative is nominated by the Minister of Transport. The International Trade User Group representative is nominated by the Minster of Transport in consultation with User Group representatives.

Liebherr presents new Smart Tyre Saving System
February 15, 2021 — Before the tyre temperature of a Liebherr reachstacker reaches a critical level where tyre wear would increase excessively, the new Smart Tyre System automatically reduces the machine speed. As soon as the tyres return to a low temperature level, the power is increased again. This ensures maximum performance and protects the tyres from excessive wear.

Port of San Diego advances new clean air, environmental justice initiatives
February 12, 2021 — The Port of San Diego is making significant moves to advance new clean air and environmental justice strategies. During its February 11 meeting, the Board of Port Commissioners approved a resolution to support development of the County of San Diego’s Regional Carbon Sustainability Plan, approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The San Diego Foundation focused on climate and coastal resiliency efforts, and received an update from staff on development of the Port’s Maritime Clean Air Strategy (MCAS) to identify and prioritize projects to further reduce emissions and improve air quality on and around San Diego Bay.

Launch of Port of Kaohsiung’s Container Transfer Scheduling System set to increase container delivery efficiency
February 5, 2021 — To alleviate cargo traffic congestion and further shorten container delivery times, Port of Kaohsiung, TIPC issued a contract in 2020 for the development of a new container transfer scheduling system capable of providing real-time information updates and other convenient user services. The objective of this system is to streamline the transfer of containerized cargoes from shipping companies to container yard operators, which may be expected to further enhance Port of Kaohsiung’s international competitiveness as a container shipping hub.
The Port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s largest international port, regularly handles around 70 percent of the nation’s containerized cargo volume. Inland transportation of containers processed at the port is handled primarily over National Freeway 1, leading to regular congestion and delays at the freeway’s Xiaogang Interchange. Furthermore, the scheduled opening of five new deep-water container wharves at the port’s 7th Container Terminal in 2024 is expected to further exacerbate inland container transportation-related congestion.
