July 14, 2021 — For the second time in four years, the Port of San Diego has been awarded National Accreditation through the American Public Works Association (APWA). The Accreditation program formally recognizes public works agencies for compliance with nationally recognized management practices and for implementing processes that go beyond these industry standards.
The Port first received National Accreditation through APWA in July 2017, the first port in the United States to be recognized with this distinction. Agencies that receive Accreditation must apply for re-accreditation every four years to ensure management practices are updated to reflect changes in the industry, and to maintain their status as an accredited agency. On July 8, 2021, the Port received official confirmation from APWA that it was awarded Full Accreditation, still the only port in the United States with this honor.
“The Port of San Diego is honored to once again be the first port in the country to receive American Public Work Association’s National Accreditation,” said Joe Stuyvesant, President & CEO of the Port of San Diego. “I am extremely proud of our Engineering-Construction Department’s professionalism and the hard work of many other departments that resulted in the Port earning this designation.”
To earn re-accreditation, the Port’s Engineering-Construction Department led the effort to document compliance with more than 200 standard practices that included areas of competence in engineering design and construction as well as in Port-wide functions such as emergency management, human resources, finance, risk management and safety, communications, and information technology. The APWA evaluators were particularly impressed with the Port’s fiscal year budget book and the New Employee Experience Department Checklist, which were recommended to be model practices nationally.
“The Port of San Diego is committed to continuous reinvestment in public projects on our dynamic San Diego Bay waterfront,” said Chairman Michael Zucchet, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “Receiving the APWA National Accreditation for a second time underscores this and demonstrates that our projects and operations reflect the absolute highest standards.”
The Port applied for the APWA Accreditation in June 2020. A virtual site visit was conducted with the APWA evaluation team in early June 2021. The APWA site visit team included members from the City of Chattanooga, TN, Department of Public Works and the City of Victoria, BC, Canada Dept. of Engineering and Public Works.
