I help port authorities, barge and towing companies, agribusiness, energy producers and shippers generally, insurers, financiers and other companies that do business in America’s ports navigate the complex mix of issues and regulations that affect their operations. For 35 years, I have specialized in maritime law and the interfaces between waterborne and land-based transportation of goods and services.
I was appointed by the George W. Bush and Barrack Obama administrations to serve two terms on the Lower Mississippi River Water Safety Advisory Committee (“LMRWSAC”) that advises the Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security on navigation safety including in and about the Port of New Orleans. I am based in the San Francisco Bay Area and am admitted to practice in California, Illinois, Missouri and numerous federal jurisdictions.
I consider the practice of law to be a profession and value longstanding relationships with my clients. I am, and have been for many years, active in the Waterways Council which urges the U.S. government to fund essential waterways infrastructure projects. I am listed in America’s Best Lawyers and have been designated a Super Lawyer. I am rated AV, the highest possible rating for performance and ethical standards, by Martindale Hubbell, which rates attorneys based upon peer review. I am happy to provide copies of recent decisions showing the favorable results I have achieved for my clients.
I graduated from Stanford Law School, Order of the Coif, in 1981. I graduated from Northwestern University, Phi Beta Kappa and first in my class, in 1978. I clerked for the Honorable Thelton E. Henderson on the U.S. District Court, N.D. California before beginning my practice. I was a member of Goldstein and Price, L.C., a maritime specialty firm located in St. Louis, Missouri, for more than 30 years.
